Just when you thought Tim Burton couldn’t do another musical quite like The Nightmare Before Christmas, he takes a monumental play and turns it into a cinematic masterpiece on film. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is easily one of Burton’s most critically acclaimed films, and also one of the best musicals of all time. With original, well-crafted characters, an exceedingly disturbing plot, and incredible soundtrack, Sweeney Todd earns a spot in Hollywood hall of fame.
“There Was a Barber and His Wife”
Burton has been known for directing some of the most unsettling and eerie films ever since he started making movies; Sweeney Todd is no exception. Benjamin Barker, a.k.a Sweeney Todd (Johnny Depp), has been put away for several years on a false charge, and has returned to London in order to be with his wife and child again. However, he soon finds out from Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter), a pie shop owner who has taken over Todd’s old barber shop, that his wife was rapped by Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman). Now consumed by anger, he seeks revenge on the judge and all other people of London by cutting their throats with his shaving knives and making them into pies for Mrs. Lovetts’ pie shop. While extremely gruesome and demonic, it’s one of the most ingenious and captivating plots I’ve ever seen.
“Pretty Women”
Next to the hauntingly, gripping plot, is the beautifully-crafted orchestral music that fits into each and every scene perfectly. Rarely are there films that draw me into the story and characters by the music, but Sweeney Todd does it in every scene. Whether it’s fast-paced during a suspenseful scene, up-beat during a funny moment, or slower-paced in a romantic scene, the soundtrack and score fit in exactly when it needs to. Next to the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Sweeney Todd has one of the most incredible and widely-acclaimed scores in films. It’s something that simply has to be heard in order to fully appreciate the effort that was put in the soundtrack.
Once again, Johnny Depp has outdone himself yet again by bringing the character of Sweeney Todd to life. His character shows no signs of emotion other than anger and torment, and obsessively plotting his revenge on the one who took him away from his wife and child. Depp’s role is cleverly brought out, turning Todd into one of the most likeable and yet highly demonic characters in the film. Along with outstanding acting, the singing and duets are brilliantly brought out, and add on to the characters personality, while at the same time, helps the plot move forward with more emotion and drama from the characters. Close to the beginning, Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett share a duet together, which is one of the most fascinating and mesmerizing moments in the characters’ performances that shows exactly why this is one of the most masterful musicals among all other films.
“I Want You Bleeders”
One thing to keep in mind is that this is not an appropriate film for younger viewers. It’s an extremely graphic and stomach-churning film that many people should want to avoid if they are easily bothered by blood and gore. While this may be a problem to some, I found that these elements showed more emotion and setting for the film. Not only that, but the dead and cut-throat scenes are highly realistic, offering a more believable image and helps keep the viewer engrossed in the experience without making them question how fake the effects are.
“Benjamin Barker!”
Every scene, every moment in this film is truly a work of masterful storytelling and originality. The mixtures of light and dark elements combine to form an emotional tale of death, revenge, corruption, murder, and fear all wrapped up into one of the most horrific, and at the same time, beautiful stories in the work of cinema. Words simply cannot describe the amazing detail and atmosphere of each scene; the lighting effects and camera work are brilliant in every way in the entire film. The climax of the film keeps you on the edge of your seat by delivering horror elements and suspenseful, heart-pounding moments that leave your mouth agape and your fingers clutching your chair to the point of acquiring splinters. There hasn’t been an ending quite as powerful, emotionally-stirring, and heart-breaking as this wonderfully crafted moment to close on such a stunning masterpiece.
“We All Deserve to Die”
Overall, I highly recommend this to anyone who loves movies, Tim Burton, or Johnny Depp. It’s a masterful film in almost every way. Offering excellent acting, a gripping plot, dynamic characters, and a musical score of genius and art, Burton has crafted together one of the most original films of all time. Along with that, Depp and Helena create the best two characters in the film, and combine them in the most spellbinding and spectacular duets in musicals. Add in a perfect ending filled with tragedy and you have a must-see film that should be a crime to overlook for any reason.
